The Nicaraguan public prosecutor asked, Tuesday 1er June, to prohibit the opponent Cristiana Chamorro, the daughter of ex-president Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, from holding public office, a step that could exclude her from the presidential election in November.
According to a press release from the prosecution, Mr.me Chamorro, 67, is accused, among other things, of “Abusive management offenses” and of “Money, property and asset laundering”.
Cristiana Chamorro is the daughter of Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, who defeated Daniel Ortega in the 1990 presidential election, as he sought re-election after his first government.
“Macabre farce”
On May 20, the prosecution opened an investigation against the foundation that bears the name of the former president and that Cristiana led, on the basis of“Clear indications of money laundering” during the 2015-2019 period.
Cristiana Chamorro, who is not a member of any political party, has the best chances against a possible candidacy of outgoing President Daniel Ortega for the November presidential election.
Mme Chamorro proclaims his innocence and refers to the accusations against him as a “Macabre farce” with the aim of removing him from the electoral race.
