Kremlin party official dies in Ukraine

A year ago, Russia illegally annexed the Ukrainian region of Kherson, then Moscow held sham elections there. One of the Kremlin party officials is now seriously injured in an attack and later dies.

An official of the Kremlin’s United Russia party has been killed by a car bomb in the town of Nova Kakhovka in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine’s Kherson region. This was announced by Moscow-appointed regional administrative chief Vladimir Saldo on Telegram.

The dead man was secretary of the local party organization of United Russia. According to information, he was seriously injured in the attack on his vehicle in the morning and later died in hospital. Ukrainian partisans are repeatedly active in the occupied part of the Kherson region.

Russia annexed the Ukrainian region together with Luhansk, Donetsk and Zaporizhia a year ago in violation of international law during its war of aggression. To this day, the Russian occupiers do not fully control any of these regions and have had to give up occupied parts in the face of Ukraine’s counteroffensive.

Nevertheless, the Kremlin held sham elections there last month, which, according to Russian sources, the Kremlin party won with a large majority. There were no independent election observers during the vote. The situation in the regions is characterized by massive human rights violations and restrictions on civil rights. Citizens were reportedly coerced into voting.
