In Spain, a huge fire ravages the Canary archipelago

More than 2,600 hectares have burned over a perimeter of more than 30 kilometers, northeast of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, according to the latest report established by the authorities. Some 3,800 people were evacuated as a precaution and some localities were confined.

The fire, which broke out on the evening of Tuesday August 15, is raging in a wooded area criss-crossed by ravines. More than 350 firefighters and soldiers, as well as seventeen aircraft, are mobilized to try to counter the flames. The Military Emergency Unit (UME), which regularly intervenes alongside the firefighters to fight the most voracious fires or the most dangerous for the population, has been mobilized.

The blaze comes after a heat wave that left many areas dry and increased the risk of wildfires. According to scientists, extreme weather events have intensified due to global warming. Spain is one of the countries at the forefront of weather disruptions. In 2023, more than 71,000 hectares have already burned in the country.
