The search to find this young Frenchman who disappeared at sea on Monday afternoon while “diving in apnea” must “resume on Tuesday”, said a spokesman for the National Maritime Authority. The alert on the disappearance of this diver had been given “by a representative of a tourism company specializing in maritime activities”.

Portuguese rescue workers were trying to find on Tuesday a 16-year-old Frenchman who had disappeared the day before while diving off Faial, in the Azores archipelago, the National Maritime Authority said. The search to find this young Frenchman who disappeared at sea on Monday afternoon while “diving in apnea” must “resume on Tuesday”, a spokesman for the National Maritime Authority told AFP. The alert to the disappearance of this diver, “about ten nautical miles (about 18 kilometers)” west of Faial, had been given “by a representative of a tourism company specializing in maritime activities”, according to the press release from the Portuguese authorities.

1,500 kilometers from Lisbon

The work of the rescuers, supported in particular by several ships and an air force plane, was interrupted at the end of the day on Monday.

The island of Faial is located in the central group of the Azores archipelago, a popular destination for tourists, about 1,500 kilometers west of Lisbon.
