After spending nine days in a coma following flu symptoms, a mother underwent more than three emergency interventions and will have to live with lifelong after-effects. We tell you.
Mother of two children, this woman of Scottish origin found herself in an incredible situation when she only thought she was suffering from a bad case of the flu. Having not consulted at the time of the events, the mother found herself hospitalized five days later between life and death following septic shock. Having not taken his flu symptoms seriously (fever, chills, hot skin, etc.), the infection worsened, leading to sepsis. Arriving at the emergency room, the doctors were then able to confirm the presence of a black mass on the left buttock of the mother, diagnosing necrotizing fasciitis.
This rare disease also known as “ devourer of flesh» results in destruction of soft tissues which can cause death in some cases. Her vital prognosis no longer being threatened today, the mother recounts her experience in the columns ofNew York Post. After spending more than nine days in a coma and undergoing three surgeries in an effort to rid her body of the disease, doctors revealed to the family that she only had a 10% chance of survival: “My family was told to prepare for the worst: they didn’t think I would make it.»

A traumatic event
If she does not know exactly what the causes of this infection are, doctors think of an ingrown hair or a stain, she recounts her experience: “It was so traumatic and changed my life forever. I lost 31 kilos and had to learn to walk again. Even now I still can’t sit up and have to carry a special pillow with me everywhere I go“. After waking up from her coma, the situation remains very complicated for the mother of two children: “I was incredibly disoriented and continued to hallucinate. (…) I woke up with a catheter, a stoma and a 20 centimeter deep wound. It took nurses two hours a day to change my bandages and clean my wounds“.
Having been able to get rid of her catheter almost eight months after the incident, she unfortunately has to keep her ostomy bag for life. Wishing to remain positive, she confides: “The only good thing that has come out of all this is that I feel closer to my husband than ever. It’s like we fell in love again“.
