War. This Saturday, May 20 marks the anniversary of the capture of Mariupol, Ukraine, by the Russians. The port city of Mariupol was pounded relentlessly for long weeks by Russian forces at the start of the invasion of Ukraine launched on February 24, 2022 by Vladimir Putin. On May 17, Moscow announced that 265 Ukrainian fighters, including 51 seriously wounded, had surrendered. The surrenders continued on the following days. kyiv salutes “heroes” who have “fulfilled their mission”. On the 20th, Russia declared that the Azovstal complex had come under “complete control” of its armed forces, after the surrender of the last of the steelworks’ 2,439 soldiers.

Discovery. On May 20, 1983, an article in the journal “Science” announced the “isolation” of a new virus, that of AIDS, by a team of three Parisian researchers from the Pasteur Institute. This discovery marked an important first step in tackling an epidemic with more than 40 million deaths. Researchers at the time Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, Jean-Claude Chermann and Luc Montagnier believe that this virus “could be involved in several pathological syndromes, including AIDS”.
