It’s not new, Netflix loses subscribers and partly blames account sharing. During this time, AppleTV+ gain territory.

Netflix still represents 21% of the American streaming market, compared to only 6% for Apple TV+. However, these numbers keep changing.

Netflix is losing ground, the others are gaining

When Netflix announced its loss of subscribers in the last quarter, the platform blamed account sharing in particular. As a reminder, an account is supposed to be shared only within the same household – but in reality, this is rarely the case. The causes of this decline in interest in the platform are in fact multiple, and include in particular the increased competition which is becoming more and more specialized, offering consumers targeted portfolios of series and films.

The competition is advancing, slowly but surely. Apple TV+ gained 1% more market share this quarter, where Netflix lost 2%. The attraction of the platform could also be its price: at €4.99 per month, compared to €8.99 for Netflix (for the basic subscription, Netflix subscriptions can climb up to €17.99), the price difference is not negligible.

Tough competition

Netflix is still the streaming platform par excellence, closely overtaken by Amazon Prime Video. Prime and Disney+ also remain cheaper and also offer a lot of original content, while Netflix has been forced to cancel certain productions due to lack of funding. Conversely, Apple TV+ currently has a small library, but one that produces award-winning films and series, such as CODA Where Ted Lasso.

Netflix is undoubtedly losing ground by dint of wanting to rally everyone: by seeking to reach an ever wider target, its productions are losing in quality. However, homemade content like Stranger Things continue to hold the attention of subscribers, and the largest streaming platform is not yet to complain.

On the other hand, it risks being dethroned quickly by Amazon Prime Video, which seems to combine subscribers and advantages: the prime subscription is 49 € per year (24 € for students) and also allows you to benefit from free delivery and fast on Amazon.
