In Upper Austria – How “climate fit” are the official cars of the politicians?

100 km/h on motorways, 30 km/h in inner cities, these are hot topics in the motoring region of Upper Austria. This raises the question of how “climate fit” Upper Austria’s government politicians are with their frequently driven company cars. Green club chairman Severin Mayr got an overview of LH Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP).

“In view of the high role model effect of the state administration and politics” for a climate-neutral Upper Austria, Greens club boss Severin Mayr asked what the state’s vehicle fleet and politicians’ official cars were like. Do you still need petrol pumps with combustion fuel or do you already need electric charging stations? This table from the query response from the responsible LH Thomas Stelzer gives an overview: The FPÖ boss also drives in a hybrid car ) and once a pure gasoline combustion engine (at Regional Councilor Langer-Weninger)? What does the trademark entry at LH Vice Manfred Haimbuchner (FPÖ) mean? The latter made his office so clear when asked by “Krone”: “He has been driving a Mercedes 300de since October 2022, i.e. a hybrid vehicle.” He says: “We have been driving our company car fully electrically for two years, so it is clear that a member of the government can also switch to e-mobility. In practical operation with fully electric service vehicles (DKW), we see that there are usually no problems or waiting times when charging the vehicle. If necessary, our chauffeurs usually drive to nearby quick-charging stations during appointments or visits.” The all-electric DKW is more than half cheaper in terms of “fuel consumption”. An additional advantage is that thousands of liters of fossil fuel did not have to be blown into the air in Upper Austria. And what about the state’s vehicle fleet? Green politician Severin Mayr also has a roadmap for converting the operation of the state’s car and truck fleet asked about electromobility. Mayr calls the answer – 50 percent of cars by 2030 – “not very ambitious”. He adds: “It takes more speed to make the changeover. You’re welcome to act as a role model!” Electrification will start at the beginning of July According to LH Thomas Stelzer, there’s no need to tease: “Climate-friendly mobility is a central building block for modern administration. The office of the Upper Austrian provincial government, with its various departments, of course also makes a contribution to achieving the climate goals,” he emphasizes. Specifically, 375 cars with alternative drives would be procured for the state administration by 2030, saving more than 3,500 tons of CO2. The BMW ix1 has already been determined as the successor model for the mid-range vehicles previously used, the VW Passat and the Skoda Octavia. At the beginning of July 2023 – i.e. right now – the first of a total of 140 electric vehicles will be taken over. Three quarters of these are in the compact class. All vehicles are leased as part of a framework tender by the Federal Procurement Agency.
