THE OPINION OF THE “WORLD” – TO SEE

Released in France in 2019, Black Panther, by Ryan Coogler, was a hit. Acclaimed by most of the critics, enthusiastically received by the public who raised it to the top of the biggest successes of the world box office, the film brought in 1.3 billion dollars in revenue. Enough to make Marvel studios confident, which immediately launched a sequel to the adventures of their first African superhero, T’Challa, whose role had been entrusted to Chadwick Boseman. The sudden death in August 2020 of the actor, then 43 years old, passed the amazement, forced a reworking of the script and postponed the shooting. In the second installment, Black Panther. Wakanda Forever (signed by the same filmmaker) the king of Wakanda is therefore dead. And it is now his mother, the majestic Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) who reigns over the kingdom.

On these sides, we find, among others, Okoye (Danai Gurira), commander of his personal guard; Princess Shuri (Letitia Wright), his daughter, a brilliant scientist struggling to recover from her brother’s disappearance; Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), vigilante, spy who was T’Challa’s fiancée; and the fearsome fighter, Ayo (Florence Kasumba). The women who, in the first part, served as beautiful supporting roles now occupy the first. They have taken the lead, power and for one of them, the place of the invincible character. Shuri becoming, in Black Panther. Wakanda Foreverthe worthy successor of her brother, the superheroine of the film.

As we have understood, feminization and mourning impose their marks. They will later appear as the pillars of the story, providing it with its two main threads: the mother-daughter relationship (in exchange for the father-son dynamic highlighted in the previous opus); the upheavals and repositionings to which the loss of a loved one is forced, both individually and collectively. This affected the film crews and is embodied in the characters, who are also forced to move forward. The strength of the story depends on it which, after a somewhat messy set-up, ends up getting us on board, bringing out both danger and, in the process, a new superhero.

Still as prosperous thanks to its gigantic deposit of vibranium, a metal which has enabled it to develop technology surpassing that of other countries, Wakanda cannot hope to live in peace. Jealoused, coveted by other powers, the threat grows, a global attack takes shape which reveals in the viewfinder, another kingdom, also holder of wealth and, for this reason, also in danger: Talokan, a submerged city under the waters of the ocean whose existence had until then escaped the surveillance of Wakandans. It is revealed to them by the visit of its sovereign, Namor, a chief with winged feet, who has come out of the waters to explain his project to Queen Ramonda. Either an alliance that would lead their two peoples into a war against the rest of the world.
