In which departments does the Omicron variant circulate the most?

HEALTH CRISIS – The Omicron variant is increasingly taking hold in the country. It would (already) be responsible for more than one in five contamination in several departments.

The Omicron variant continues to spread throughout France. According to data from Public Health France relayed by CovidTracker, this strain initially detected in southern Africa and more contagious than the Delta is now suspected almost everywhere in the territory. In some departments, more than one in five cases is linked to this variant.

Omicron variant: the planet on alert

According to data from the health agency, 27.23% of cases detected in Paris on December 19 did not concern the Delta variant, the majority in France for many months. Among them should therefore be the Omicron variant, the other strains having almost entirely disappeared from the landscape. Île-de-France seems particularly affected by Omicron, suspected in 23.4% of cases in Seine-et-Marne, 17.9% in Hauts-de-Seine, 17.51% in Val-de- Marne and 16.53% in Yvelines.

Only six departments spared

Outside the Paris region, Sarthe (25.5%), Puy-de-Dôme (21.28%), Nièvre (20%) or Vienne (16.56%) remain the most affected departments by Omicron’s suspicions. On the other hand, this more contagious strain is, for the moment, not suspected in Calvados, Creuse, Gers, Lozère, Hautes-Alpes or Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, the only departments spared in metropolis.

In the overseas territories, Guadeloupe (25%) and Mayotte (20%) also seem to be affected by the large-scale emergence of the Omicron variant.

Discovered initially in South Africa, this strain has caused a significant increase in contamination in the country. Since then, the United Kingdom, also confronted with the variant, has seen its number of cases skyrocket. Health Minister Olivier Véran expects Omicron to become the majority in France in the coming days. Proof of its presence in the territory, the number of cases of Covid-19 is still on the rise in the country, while the Delta variant is no longer progressing.
