In Yemen, torrential rain kills 10 people

Ten people, including four children, died Sunday in floods and the collapse of a building after torrential rains that fell on the capital of Yemen and its surroundings, report the authorities of this country ravaged by seven years of war.

The four children died in the collapse of a building in Sanaa and the six other people perished in their car carried away by downpours near the capital, underline the authorities.

Every year, torrential rains fall on Yemen and cause the rivers to rise dangerously. A three-storey building in the historic district of Sanaa collapsed, killing four children, a local hospital doctor told AFP.

A downpour washed away a car and its six occupants in Dhamar governorate (south of Sanaa), local relief official Nashwan al-Samawi told the Yemeni Saba news agency.

The poorest country on the Arabian Peninsula and in a situation of near famine has been devastated for more than seven years by the war between the Houthis, rebels close to Iran, and government forces, supported since 2015 by a coalition led by neighboring Saudi Arabia. The two parties have signed a truce in place since April 2 and which is due to end in early August.
