Incredibly powerful – the new Bugatti gets a 16-cylinder hybrid drive

Will Bugatti continue to build fascinating combustion engines? With cylinder numbers beyond good and evil? Now that the brand is closely linked to super electrician Rimac? Yes, definitely. The news comes from Molsheim that the number 16 will be retained in the engine. But pretty much everything else changes.

Building a pure combustion engine is probably no longer possible at Bugatti either. Therefore, in the future there will be a hybrid drive under the hood, meaning the combination of electric drive and combustion engine will provide propulsion. However, 16 cylinders continue to provide fascination, although it will no longer be a W16, but a V16, so the cylinders will be arranged differently. Bugatti has already published a short video of the engine (see above). However, the French are still very careful with more detailed information. To be more precise, there aren’t any yet. Previous reports suggest that the engine was developed by Cosworth, does not require supercharging and could have a displacement of 8.3 liters. There is also talk of three electric motors, which will round out the peak output to 1800 hp. The crankshaft should move at up to 9000 rpm. turn. Everything is still speculation. Only the V16 hybrid drive has been confirmed. Nothing is known about the possible performance of the combustion engine. Most recently, Bugatti got up to 1600 hp and 1600 Nm from the eight-liter sixteen-cylinder engine using quadruple turbocharging. According to Volkswagen boss Ferdinand Piëch’s initial idea, it should have been 18 cylinders. But this will probably not happen in the future either.
