NEW DELHI (Reuters) – India will ban the use of single-use plastic from Friday for products such as straws and cigarette packs, in a move to tackle pollution and the accumulation of waste .
The government has rejected requests from companies in the food, drink and consumer goods sector to delay the entry into force of this ban to avoid supply disruptions.
India, which uses about 14 million tons of plastic per year, does not have an organized system for managing plastic waste.
Along with straws and cigarette packs, the ban targets cutlery, headphones, wrappers, plastic rods for balloons, candy and ice cream wrappers, Prime Minister Narendra’s government said. Modi in a statement.
Plastic bags are currently exempt from the ban, but the government has asked manufacturers and importers to increase their thickness to facilitate their reuse.
