In theaters since Wednesday, “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” contains some references to the first four parts of the saga. Back on these winks that should not be missed. Warning, spoilers!
Released in theaters this Wednesday, June 28, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth and final adventure of the most famous adventurer in cinema, launches Harrison Ford on the trail of a new legendary artefact: the mythical Archimedes dial. , supposed to allow its owner to locate temporal fissures.
This final chapter, orchestrated by James Mangold, is not without inspiring a certain nostalgia, and the fans of the first hour will be able to recognize several references to the first four parts of the famous saga. Back on these few reminiscences gratifying that dot the last adventure of Indiana Jones. Warning, spoilers!

If this fifth part takes place in 1969, the film opens with a flashback sequence set in 1944, where a forty-year-old Indiana Jones is already trying to take back the Dial of Destiny from the officer Nazi Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen).
An introduction that will undoubtedly remind fans of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, in which a (younger) Indy also fought on the roof of a train to recover a precious artifact: at the time, the Cross of Coronado.

Indiana Jones, 80, is about to retire from New York as a professor of archeology at Hunter College.
If you open your eyes well in his apartment, you will see the presence of a photograph of Henry Jones Sr., the adventurer’s father played by Sean Connery, and who had helped him find the Grail in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

In the first part of the feature film, when Indiana Jones thought he was beginning to enjoy a well-deserved retirement, he receives a visit from his goddaughter Helena Shaw, who leads him despite himself on a very last quest.
In the middle of a parade dedicated to the Apollo 11 mission (which is in full swing at the same time), Indy must escape Voller’s men in the middle of Manhattan. Facing the latter’s cars and motorized vehicles, the adventurer rushes on horseback, exactly as he had done against Donovan’s tanks, in The Last Crusade.
The Return of Sallah

Faithful companion of Indy’s adventures, already present in Raiders of the Lost Ark and in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusadethis Egyptian excavator who faced many perils alongside the archaeologist is back in this fifth opus.
For him too, the years have passed. Now residing in a small New York apartment with his family – whom Indy apparently helped bring over from Egypt – Sallah offers him hospitality when he seeks to outrun his pursuers.

Ever since he fell into a bin full of little snakes at the start ofIndiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the famous adventurer has developed a real phobia for anything that crawls or undulates. From the tiny asp to the large anaconda, Indy hates all forms of snakes, but consistently finds himself confronted with his greatest fear in every episode of the saga.
The fifth opus, of course, is no exception, except that the traditional snakes have been replaced here by moray eels, nesting in the depths of Greek waters. Terrified as usual, the adventurer will unfortunately not make the difference.

When he enumerates to his goddaughter all the perils he has already incurred during his rich career, Indiana Jones specifies in particular that he has “was delivered to the goddess Kali” and that he has “suffered voodoo torture”. The archaeologist is obviously referring to his sinister adventure in the Accursed Temple, the second part of the saga, during which he was captured and manipulated by an evil sect, adept at human sacrifice.

Another echo to Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom in this fifth opus: the short sequence in which Indy and Helena, just before reaching the tomb of Archimedes, cross a narrow corridor whose walls are covered with giant centipedes.
In the second part of the saga, accompanied by Demi-Lune and Willie, the adventurer had indeed already surveyed a passage swarming with insects. What give him the naive impression, before having been able to light his torch, to walk on strange dry cakes.

At the end of the feature film, once back in his New York apartment, Indiana Jones is surprised to find his wife Marion, who had refused to see him for several years.
The moving reunion of the two lovers directly refers to a famous scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark, in which they traveled aboard a freighter after leaving Egypt. Wounded, Indy refused to be treated by Marion, who then asked him to show him the few places that did not hurt him so that he could kiss them.

In the very last shot of the film, we can see Indy’s hand recovering his precious Fedora, drying on the terrace of his apartment.
A gesture now emblematic of the saga, which the adventurer was able to renew in practically all his adventures, and in particular in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, at the end of the famous insect scene (which we mentioned earlier). As the walls of a fearsome trap closed behind him, he barely had time to reach out to grab his trusty hat in extremis.
