Infant Under One Dies of Covid-19

A baby under the age of one died as a result of Covid-19 in the Chicago area. This is the first infant death linked to the new coronavirus, recorded in the United States.

Children generally seem more resistant to the new coronavirus. However, the Governor of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker, announced some very sad news this Saturday, March 28. Indeed, a very young child died of the Covid-19 in the Chicago area. This is the first infant death in the United States, now the country most affected in the world by the coronavirus pandemic. The baby's age has not been released, but it looks like he was only a few months old.

"There has never been a death associated with Covid-19 in an infant. An in-depth investigation is underway to determine the cause of death. We must do everything we can to prevent the spread of this deadly virus. is not to protect us, it is to protect those around us."said Dr. Ngozi Ezike, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).

This terrible death is not the first death in an infant linked to the new coronavirus. A 10 month old baby with the disease died 4 weeks after being admitted to the children's hospital in Wuhan, China.

If Covid-19 is much more dangerous for the elderly, doctors realize as the pandemic progresses thatno age group is really immune against the disease and its sometimes very serious effects on health.

On March 26, France was in shock when it learned of the death of Julie, a teenager aged just 16 years. He is the first such young victim to die from consecutive complications from the new coronavirus in the country. The girl had no pre-existing illness. Before her hospitalization, she had only a mild cough.

The Director General of Health, Professor Jérôme Salomon, explained that young subjects in the 15 to 44 age group could have severe forms of the coronavirus but that this was "extremely rare". They represent only 8% of serious cases admitted to intensive care and just over half have co-morbidities.
