The PS5 will be three years old in November 2023, so far Sony has not launched a new version of the console apart from the two models introduced at the start, with and without a drive. Many fans think it’s high time for a PS5 Pro or PS5 Slim. After all, Sony donated a Slim and a PS4 Pro version to the PS4 around three years after the market launch. Lo and behold: Sony has announced a new variant of the PlayStation 5.

However, this is neither a PS5 Slim model nor a more powerful PS5 Pro, which is also traded in the rumor mill, but a first special edition. So far, the Japanese manufacturer had only released PS5 bundles. These contained the console in the standard look and a respective game.

Special edition to celebrate the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Sony will now release a console with a matching design for the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 on October 20, 2023. Pre-orders for these will be available on PlayStation Direct from July 28, the company announced on PlayStation Blog. However, various retailers are already listing the console – including MediaMarkt, Amazon and Saturn. The price: 659.99 euros.

That’s what makes the new PS5 so special

Both the look of the controller and the console are inspired by the game. Sony worked closely with developer Insomniac Games. Jacinda Chew, Senior Art Director, Insomniac Games describes the design as follows:

The design is inspired by the in-game symbiote, which takes over the console and controllers – but you can still see some red under the vines. This represents the different ways players can experience taking over the symbiote in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. It’s a constant back and forth struggle for supremacy – internal or external – and the end is not certain.

The new PlayStation should appear before the release of the game – namely on September 20th. It comes with a code for the game. If you already have a PS5, you don’t have to worry. Because Sony will offer you corresponding covers and shells for retrofitting, with which you can transform your PS5 into a Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 special edition. However, a price for the covers has not yet been set.

However, there should be a corresponding demand. Because on YouTube, the comments on the special edition are mostly positive. Fans tossed praises like “amazing, spectacular or even ultimate” and “this looks INCREDIBLE.” around yourself. Will the reactions to a PS5 Slim or Pro be similarly positive?

If you like the new controller in a bundle, but you already have a PS5 console, you can also order the gamepad individually. Media Markt and Saturn are offering the PS5 controller in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Edition for pre-order for EUR 79.99. The controllers will be delivered from September 1, 2023.

PS5 Slim in September?

Despite the new special edition, a PS5 Slim for 2023 is not off the table. Competitor Microsoft expects a release later in the year. An insider predicts the release in September. According to his information, Sony will save space by connecting the drive externally in the future.
