Intel Arc is worse than NVIDIA for ray tracing, and it’s Intel who says so… Well, almost

Better or worse, it’s time for Intel graphics cards to decide to come out for good, before it’s too late.

Intel’s sometimes confusing communication around its range of Arc GPUs has at least the merit of dealing with almost all subjects, and this, in a fairly didactic way, like this episode devoted to ray tracing.

Ray tracing by example

As usual, Intel therefore documents things well. Thus, on his official website, his message begins with an explanation of what ray tracing is and what it consists of.


The technique is logically opposed to rasterization, but Intel also specifies that one can adopt a so-called “hybrid” approach which mixes the two methods. The manufacturer then details how its graphics solutions best manage ray tracing.

There, things are a little trickier for Intel, which is trying to explain how Arc GPUs have high-performance hardware to handle ray tracing. Why ” a little more delicate »? Because Intel then compares its performance to that of NVIDIA.

The Arc A770 around 14% better than the RTX 3060

Intel therefore decides to compare the results obtained in ray tracing by an Arc A770 GPU with those that can be obtained with a GeForce RTX 3060.

In total, performances on 17 games are presented, from Cyberpunk 2077 until Metro ExodusPassing by F1 2022 Where Ghostwire Tokyo. Unsurprisingly (after all, this is a communication from Intel), it is the Arc A770 solution which is on average the most efficient.

Some will, however, take malicious pleasure in reading between the lines. Indeed, while it tended to compare the GeForce RTX 3060 to its mid-range solution, the Arc A750, for ray tracing, Intel must draw the Arc 770 to measure itself against the NVIDIA card.

As always, we’ll have to wait for independent tests, if they ever come around, before concluding anything, but Intel seems to be a clear step behind NVIDIA for ray tracing support, which hasn’t moreover nothing surprising for his first attempt in the matter.
