A processor not finalized which already shows about 10% better performance in singlethread test.

A few weeks (months?) before the official launch of the Raptor Lake range, things are becoming clearer on Intel’s side. A fine series of measures comes to oppose the future spearhead of the 13e generation to the beefiest processors of the 12e generation.

Up to 5.7 GHz boost

We make it clear in the title of this news, there is no question of a definitive CPU. However, the chip under test is what is called a ” sample qualification and is therefore very close to the final model.

It’s a Core i9-13900K which, as we’ve known for a while, has 24 cores and 32 threads. It has power limits (MTB) of 125 and 250 W. There is also talk of a base frequency of 3 GHz for a boost of 5.7 GHz in the best case.

Finally, the tests were done on an ASUS ROG Z690 Extreme motherboard with DDR5 6400 MT/s and a GeForce RTX 3060 Ti graphics card. For the power supply, a 1500 W block was used, and a Thermalright AIO Frozen Magic 360 took care of the cooling.

Anxious to do well, the author of this first test of a Core i9-13900K notably conducted measurements with CPU-Z, GeekBench, AIDA64, CineBench in version R20 and R23, Blender, WinRAR and 3DMark.

On average 35% faster when multithreaded

Through these numerous tests, he concludes that the Core i9-13900K is indeed faster than the Core i9-12900KF. The estimate hovers around an average of 10% on single-threaded tools and 35% in multi-threaded tests with a peak of 46.34% on CPU-Z.

Conveniently enough, the author has gathered all of his metrics into a single chart. We then notice that the Raptor Lake is faster than the Alder Lake on all the tests, with the exception of one, writing to memory on AIDA64.

By digging into the question, however, our tester noticed that the gains came mainly from the higher frequencies of the Core i9-13900K. At equal frequency, the two processors effectively fit in a pocket handkerchief.

In addition, there is the question of the thermal efficiency of Raptor Lake. It will be necessary to test with our own cooling solution, but the AiO used for the occasion could not prevent the CPU from reaching 100 ° C with a power package of 420 W.

This review of a Core i9-13900K is interesting, but ultimately it raises more questions than it answers. Finally, it should be kept in mind that this is not yet a final version of the processor, and that the BIOS of the motherboard can still be optimized.
