The next generation of processors Intel will generate an unnamed bazaar in the designations of the various chips.

Intel has repeated it many times, its Meteor Lake processors will be launched before the end of 2023. On the other hand, the question of an update for Raptor Lake processors arose.

Meteor and Raptor Lake within a single Gen

Several rumors actually reported a dual launch on two different architectures for Intel. On the one hand, the Meteor Lake generation may be limited to certain types of processors (low consumption?), and on the other, an update of the Raptor Lake chips.

We had to wait for details from Intel China to have the end of the story and, as you will see, things are not simple with this dual Meteor/Raptor Lake architecture, but also the change in nomenclature imposed by Intel in order to “clarify” its ranges.

Indeed, if the new nomenclature seems to have to impose itself with the Meteor Lake chips, Intel confuses the tracks when it comes to the refresh of the Raptor Lake, with several ranges and several names.

A 14e and last Gen of “Core i#”

Through a series of questions and answers, Intel China therefore first confirmed that Meteor Lake would only use the new nomenclature, with Core Ultra 5/7/9 processors which seem to confirm the release of more varied models than which had been mentioned for a while.

Raptor Lake-U refresh should also adopt the new way of designating Intel chips, with Core 3/5/7. This decision supports the idea of a mix of architecture for this new generation with high-end Meteor Lake (Core Ultra) supplemented by Raptor Lake-U refresh for less powerful processors (Core).

Along with this, Intel plans to launch a 14e generation of “Core i#” CPUs (the last to be so named) exclusively made up of Raptor Lake refresh. On one side we find the Raptor Lake-S refresh desktop models and, on the other, the Raptor Lake-HX refresh mobile models… Why make it simple when you can make it complicated, right?
