Intel is well positioned on the issue of AV1 codec. We learn that unlike current solutions from NVIDIA and AMD, graphics cards Intel’s ARC will be able to completely handle the free codec.

Efficient, powerful and above all royalty-free, the AV1 codec competes with the HEVC (H.265) and AVC (H.264) codecs, and is becoming more and more widespread in the industry. It must be said that it has the big advantage of avoiding lawsuits for infringement of patents, such as the one that Samsung recently suffered for having offered support for the H.265 codec after its license expired.

ARC cards will fully support AV1

Exploited in particular by YouTube and Netflix, the AV1 codec will therefore be fully supported by Intel’s ARC GPUs. The brand will be the first to offer full support for this codec on a graphics card. Understand that Intel’s chips will be able to take care of decoding but also AV1 encoding… whereas AMD and NVIDIA cards currently only support decoding.

Finally, according to Intel, hardware encoding of AV1 on its new ARC GPUs is 50 times faster than encoding based simply on software solutions. Good news for creatives.
