A homecoming for Jeff Wilcox

Jeff Wilcox confirmed on his LinkedIn page his return to Intel after nearly a decade at Apple: “ After eight amazing years, I have decided to leave Apple and take another opportunity. It’s been an incredible journey, and I couldn’t be prouder of all we accomplished during my time there, culminating in the Apple Silicon transition with SOCs and M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max systems
. I will miss all my colleagues and Apple friends. “

The engineer will occupy the position of technical director of engineering and SoC design with his new employer. He should therefore take advantage of his long stay at Apple to help Intel accelerate in this more than strategic market.

Intel seeks to strengthen itself in SoC development and reassure after Apple abandonment

Indeed, even if Intel presented dozens of new processors at CES 2022, the manufacturer has lost its aura for several years. Apple’s relatively smooth transition from Intel processors to ARM architecture has prompted the entire industry to consider SoCs for the design of future computers.

More energy efficient for very high power, SoCs integrate a processor and graphics chip, but can also accommodate a modem for cellular communications. Intel is working hard to offer SoCs to its various partners, and this recruitment should allow it to accelerate its developments.

On the side of Apple, nothing should move despite this departure. The manufacturer’s roadmap is probably set in stone for several years, and its teams are solidly built to prepare for the future of Apple Silicon chips.
