In its fight with Samsung and TSMC, Intel does not intend to give up: the next ones processors Americans will be at the forefront or they will not be!
In the middle of last year, Pat Gelsinger – CEO of Intel – did not go with the back of the spoon to relaunch his company. He announced his intention to overtake TSMC on 2 nm and (re)become the second founder in the world.
An intention then re-affirmed at regular intervals until today with its event Intel Foundry Direct Connect during which the company set new milestones towards the Intel 14A by 2027.
“ Five knots in four years »
Intel Foundry Direct Connect is not just an event to get people talking about the American firm, it is also and above all the new planned program “ to realize its ambition to be number 2 in cross-country skiing by 2030 “.
In the presence of the American Secretary of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, the CEO of ARM, Rene Haas, the CEO of Open AI, Sam Altman, as well as other personalities, Intel wanted to impress by mentioning Intel Foundrya ” a more sustainable systems foundry business designed for the AI era » as well as a new, particularly ambitious roadmap.
Thus, to succeed in (re)becoming the runner-up to TSMC by 2030, Intel is relying on an already well-known mantra summarized in four characters: 5N4Y or five nodes in four yearsor five (production) nodes in four years.
The Intel 14A by 2027
Of these five nodes, three are considered to have already been reached by Intel, the Intel 7, Intel 4 and Intel 3. Two remain, the most complex, for the contract to be fulfilled. If we are to believe the new roadmap published by Intel on the sidelines of its event, this should be done.
Indeed, the Intel 20A and Intel 18A are nearing completion: they should enter production during 2024, which will allow the company to launch the continuation of the program which, for the first time, benefited a more precise roadmap. Of course, there is talk of optimizing current processes with the Intel 3-T for example, improved for new 3D packaging.
More importantly, Intel is already discussing the continuation of the program with the introduction of the Intel 14A and the Intel 14A-E. Such announcements are of course a declaration of intent, but they underline the offensive nature that Intel has taken over under the presidency of Pat Gelsinger. An offensive that we should see in action upon the arrival of node 18A.
According to the main managers of the American group, the putting into production of this node is major for Intel: from next year, it should allow it to regain technological leadership. Of course, TSMC doesn’t see it the same way.
