(CercleFinance.com) – Intel announced on Friday the start of production at its new factory in Leixlip (Ireland), which will produce products from its new generation technology, called ‘Intel 4’.
The semiconductor manufacturer highlights that its site is equipped with the latest extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, a first for large-scale chip production in Europe.
The Californian group recalls that this ‘fab’ must play an important role in the marketing of its next Intel Core Ultra processors, codenamed Meteor Lake, and future Intel Xeons, which are scheduled to be marketed in 2024.
More generally, Intel emphasizes that extreme ultraviolet lithography systems should allow it to achieve its objective of reaching five engraving nodes in four years and once again becoming the world leader in chip manufacturing processes by 2025.
Beyond the commissioning of its Irish ‘Fab 34’, the company also says it is banking heavily on its planned factory in Magdeburg (Germany) and its test facility in Wroclaw (Poland), with the aim of create a true European ecosystem in semiconductors.
Intel explains that the establishment of a solid supply chain is essential in the face of the emergence of new technologies in AI, telecoms, data centers or automobiles.
The Leixlip campus also aims to be exemplary in terms of ecological impact, with 100% of its electricity coming from renewable energies, the return of 88% of the water used to the River Liffey and a rate of only 0.6% of its waste to landfills.
Following these announcements, Intel shares rose on Wall Street on Friday, marking one of the strongest gains in the Dow Jones index, up 0.4%.
