The update to Android 14 brings numerous innovations to Samsung cell phones. One also concerns the display of the internal storage capacity of the cell phone. This was previously specified in the binary number system. For Samsung, the specification 1 gigabyte corresponds to 1,024 * 1,024 * 1,024 bytes in this system. In the future, Samsung will now use the decimal number system. 1 gigabyte here corresponds to 1,000 x 1,000 x 1,000 bytes. This is intended to avoid misunderstandings regarding storage space information.
The use of different systems often causes this in the industry. For example, for a 1 terabyte hard drive, Windows only shows 930 gigabytes of free space. This is because Microsoft is not adhering to a decision made by the International Electronic Commission in 1989. Instead of using the prefixes “Kilo” and “Giga” from the decimal system, this proposed the prefixes “Kibi” and “Gibi” for the binary number system.
Samsung now calculates in the decimal system
1 kibibyte is therefore 1,024 bytes, 1 kilobyte is 1,000 bytes. 1 terabyte hard drives have 931 gibibytes in the binary system and 1,000 gigabytes in the decimal system. Windows calculates according to the binary number system, but uses the units of measurement of the decimal number system because these have become common language usage. However, this gives the impression that the hard drive does not have 1,000 gigabytes, but only 930 gigabytes.
According to Samsung, the change in the display of storage capacity is at the request of the community. However, the South Korean manufacturer points out in its members app that in other third-party apps the storage capacity can still be represented in the binary number system.
