  • The airlines are expecting a total of 4.3 billion passengers worldwide in the current year. This is announced by the world aviation association Iata.
  • That is almost as many passengers as in the previous record year 2019, when the airlines counted 4.5 billion passengers.
  • The increased traffic gives companies hope for high profits. They could be more than twice as high as projected by the World Aviation Association in December.

The fact that the number of passengers has increased noticeably has been favored by the reopening of China after rigid measures in the corona crisis.

Unmatched pre-pandemic profit levels

The significantly higher number of passengers on the one hand and higher ticket prices on the other will result in a return to profitability for the airlines. Net income for this year is expected to be $9.8 billion – twice what Iata was expecting.

The airlines are likely to remain a long way from the profit level of the year before the pandemic, also because of the higher kerosene prices: According to earlier information, the industry had flown a profit of 26.4 billion dollars with better utilized aircraft in 2019.
