  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF) will continue to be led by the Bulgarian economist Kristalina Georgieva for the next five years.
  • The IMF said Georgieva was re-elected for a second term starting October 1.
  • She was the only candidate.

Georgieva said she was honored to be selected for a second term. She looks forward to further collaboration. Georgiewa is named after her predecessor Christine
Lagarde, the second woman to head the IMF, founded in 1944. Georgieva replaced Lagarde in her second term in 2019, when the Frenchwoman became ECB president.

Germany and France had spoken out in favor of a second term in office for the head of the IMF. The Europeans traditionally hold the top job at the IMF, while the Americans occupy the leadership of the World Bank.

Among other things, the IMF is supposed to coordinate monetary policy, promote the stability of the foreign exchange markets and help overcome regional financial crises. It grants member states with
acute payment problems loans, which are mostly tied to the fulfillment of strict programs to restructure the state budget.
