More and more people are surfing the net, younger and younger and less and less aware of the dangers present on the web. This is how we could summarize the findings of the latest study by Axa Prévention.

For ten years now, this organization has set up with the national gendarmerie what is called Internet Licensea prevention campaign that has made it possible to educate no less than 3 million students about the dangers of the web in Francee. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of this system launched in 2013, the association wanted to take stock of the digital practices of our children.

52% of 9-11 year olds connect to the Internet every day

To do this, Axa Prévention submitted an online questionnaire to a sample of 1,000 couples and children. Thus, we learn in particular that nearly one child aged between 9 and 11 (52%) connects to the Internet almost every day. More worryingly, 22% of them are already registered on social networks. Remember that access to Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat and others is normally prohibited for children under 13…

From the 6th, the number of registered on these platforms climbs to 40%. According to the report, these tweens are regularly exposed to the following content:

  • violent content (57%)
  • pornographic images or videos (39%)
  • degrading content (23%)

More than half of students have no idea of the risks on the web

But what we will especially remember from the study is this worrying figure: 52% of children between the ages of 9 and 11 are unaware of the dangers present on the web. A percentage that has lost 9 points since 2013, sign of a loss of momentum in prevention and awareness.

This result concerns us, but it is due to the trivialization of Internet use by the entire population. At the same time, there is an increasing complexity of the dangers present on the web”, declares in the columns of Figaro Eric Lemaire, president of Axa Prévention.

Even so, the report highlights an increased awareness of cyberbullying. In effect, 82% of pupils (and this, from primary school) are aware of this phenomenon and its effects. A significant improvement compared to the figures recorded in 2019, i.e. 78%. Please note that there is still work to be done on this subject: 50% of students do not know how to react if they witness cases of cyberbullying.
