This is why traditional phone calls are no longer the preferred means of communication in Germany. According to a market analysis by the Association of Telecommunications and Value Added Services (VATM), the strong downward trend from 2012 to 2019 was slowed down. But mobile communications have long overtaken the fixed network in terms of outgoing call minutes, so-called over-the-top services (OTT) such as Skype and FaceTime are hot on the heels of the fixed network. These alternatives make the classic telephone dispensable for many users. So why book internet with a landline? Couldn’t it be cheaper without a telephone connection?

Only very few providers that operate regionally actually offer an Internet connection without a telephone connection. Currently these are Mnet from Munich and htp from Lower Saxony.

Mnet supplies Bavaria and Hesse with high-speed internet – without a landline network if required. The “Surf Flat” tariffs with bandwidths of 25 to 600 Mbps in the down and 5 to 200 Mbps in the upload come without a landline connection. In comparison to the so-called double flat rates with telephone connection and flat rate, you save 5 euros per month here. The high-speed fiber optic tariff with 1,000 Mbps is currently not available without a landline.

The situation is similar with the Lower Saxony provider htp, which offers the “Surf” tariff with various bandwidths between 50 and 250 Mbps (upload: 10 to 40 Mbps). This does not contain a landline and is also consistently 5 euros cheaper than the corresponding htp tariffs with landline connection including landline flat rate.
DSL without landline network: savings can be made without a flat rate
The other providers who offer a DSL connection without a landline usually mean: without a landline flat rate. Telephoning is very possible, but is then billed per minute of the call. However, there are only four nationwide providers with such a tariff: Vodafone, Eazy, Congstar and Primacall.

PYUR, a brand of Tele Columbus AG, focuses primarily on the regions of Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia. The cable internet tariffs with bandwidths between 20 and 1,000 Mbps for download (3 to 50 Mbps for upload) do not come as standard without a telephone connection, but this can be booked for 0 euros. Leaving them out does not offer any savings potential. The situation is different with the fixed-line flat rate: If you don’t need one, you can get the surcharge of 5 euros per month for free. Calls to the fixed network then cost 3 cents per minute.
