The information remains patchy for the moment, although there is no doubt that the computer attack of which Intersport, one of the world leaders in the distribution of sports equipment, may have been the victim, will get people talking. The company reportedly suffered a cyberattack carried out by the Hunters group, which excels in trapping its targets using ransomware. 52 GB of sensitive data would be in the hands of hackers. Intersport is investigating.
52 GB of sensitive Intersport data potentially stolen by hackers
On the dark web, the Hunters International group, which claimed responsibility for the computer attack, launched the countdown. Intersport would now have less than two days to pay the demanded ransom. Failing this, the group therefore reserves the right to make some of the stolen data public, or to sell it to the most generous.
Hunters would have stolen 52 GB of sensitive data, for a total which would exceed 25,000 files, according to information revealed by ethical hacker Clément Domingo. Customer data and employee records would be included in the package.
Several elements call into question this computer attack. The Hunters International group is not unknown, and above all, this cyberattack may not be the first carried out by the latter against Intersport.
The Hunters group would be the heir to Hive, dismantled by the authorities in 2023
Intersport, like Benetton, whose Hunters also claimed responsibility for an attack, has already been the victim of such incidents in the past. As Valéry Marchive, the editor-in-chief of Mag ITIntersport was hit by a cyberattack at the end of 2022, then claimed by Hive.
Interestingly, the Hunters International group would actually be the heir to Hive, which was caught in early 2023 during an FBI operation. “ So, I wonder if the brand new claims concerning Intersport and Benetton would not be recycling », Supports Valéry Marchive. “ Cyberattacker groups use communication to make themselves known and improve their image among their affiliates. », adds Stéphanie Ledoux, CEO of the crisis management specialist Alcyconie, to Clubic.
“ The Hunters group, which seems to be a resurgence of the Hive group dismantled a few months ago, could clearly be in this perspective of seeking visibility and credibility. Therefore, any attack claimed on the darknet and not confirmed by the victim should be taken with a grain of salt. However, whether this attack is real or not, it inevitably plunges Intersport into a crisis situation, which if not technical – time will tell – is at least reputational. And this is already a major issue for the company, and requires an appropriate response for its customers. », continues the manager.
Intersport is investigating but is not alarmed
We contacted the Intersport company to ask them what could possibly be happening on their side after these revelations. The company told us late Thursday morning that it was analyzing the situation, which nevertheless appears to be “ recycling of a very localized attack that occurred at the end of 2022 among one of our members », yes, the famous cyberattack that we talked about above.
