INTERVIEW. Fabien Cicoletta (The Voice 2022): “When my son was eliminated, my heart exploded”

This Saturday, March 12, Fabien Cicoletta joined the eleventh season of The Voice by joining the team of Marc Lavoine. For Télé Star, this professional singer who participated with his eldest son looks back on this sad and joyful adventure.

Télé Star: Why did you want to participate in The Voicemoreover with your son?

I had been in contact with the production for a few years but this year it was my wife Pascale who signed up our son and me. It was a surprise. Participate in The Voice with my son multiplied my emotions by 10,000.

At the time, it was the production that contacted you?

Yes, they had come for me a long time ago. In 2014 and 2015. Twice in a row. But then it fell into oblivion. On my side too, since I was professionally active. And then, it’s not easy to embark on this adventure when you’re a singer. It’s a total questioning.

Were you afraid of finishing your performance without a coach turning around?

In the end, I didn’t think too much about it. I relied a lot on my son. I said to myself – perhaps to relieve myself – that I was above all there for him.

You shared the stage with Michel Jonasz. What memory do you keep?

He’s a lovely person. It was fantastic to be on stage with him, to sing the chorus on legendary titles that I listened to when I was young, like The Jazz Box for example. He wanted to share this moment with us, which I found very nice and generous, since he doesn’t need that.

Fabien Cicoletta: “I’m more of a fan of Florent Pagny but the personality of Marc Lavoine attracted me more”

Florent Pagny and Marc Lavoine turned around. Why did you choose the latter?

To be honest, I haven’t watched too much. The Voice these last years. Finding certain tests – in particular the Battles – sometimes cruel, I had difficulty viewing this broadcast. But with the health crisis, I had a lot less work. Saturday nights, so I was home and the whole family was watching. I found that Marc Lavoine always had a very accurate speech, that he listened. That’s why I went to him. I’m much more of a fan of Florent Pagny’s music, but Marc Lavoine’s personality appealed to me more.

Marc Lavoine challenged you to sing in French. Will you raise it in the next step?

I would like. I hope so. I am at the head of a two-hour piano-voice show on French song and my pianist has just died so it would be enormously symbolic to be able to sing in French at the Battles.

Were you able to discuss with your coach before the Battles?

I think it is done later, advancing in the competition. There, it was very short. We met with the whole team of Marc Lavoine but our exchanges were limited. Despite everything, he is someone who puts us in confidence and who is really adorable.

In this happiness, there is a shadow on the board: your son Ugo was not selected. How did you experience it?

I’m his dad so when I saw that no coach was turning around, my heart exploded. My first thought was to want to leave my place to him. I knew that afterwards, we were going to find each other again and that it would be very difficult. Singing is his life. He was born into it. He’s been on stage with us since he was 8-9 years old.

Fabien Cicoletta: “My son may see my youngest in The Voice Kids”

As a professional, how do you view his performance?

I was so emotional that I don’t really remember [rires]. Ugo is an artist, his emotions overflow, you have to channel it. He may have drowned a bit. But I don’t have too many memories. I remember when he entered the stage and his dark eyes, then after where he was paralyzed with disappointment.

We saw you very moved at the end of his performance. Has it tainted your happiness?

Oh yes, completely same. I suffered twice because at the end of Ugo’s performance, I saw Raphaël crying on video in the Family room. It made my heart skip a beat in half a second. It completely overshadowed my passage, even if, once recovered, I felt the pride of having been buzzed.

In an ideal world, if the coaches had turned for Ugo. Did you plan to continue the competition in the same team?

We talked about it a bit. I had blocked on Marc Lavoine but until the last second, I was not sure of my choice. Ugo would rather have gone to Vianney as first choice or Marc Lavoine. We had worked out all the possible scenarios but it would have been impossible for me to find myself in Battle against my son.

Does your younger brother also sing?

Yes. If he has the courage, maybe this year we will see Raphaël in The Voice Kids, as he is 11 years old. He is a little more shy, reserved but he sings very well too.

What do you expect from this participation in The Voice ?

The first title of my EP will be released right after The Voice to try to surf this ephemeral wave. I would also like to take advantage of this visibility to gain more recognition from performance halls, so that they can receive me more easily. This help would be welcome.
