Connecticut police say they have opened an investigation into the death of a young woman following a date with a man she had just met.

“It looks more like manslaughter,” family attorney Darnell Crosland told WTNH Monday night. “It looks more like a murder, and if the police do not start to act quickly, we are going to have a very big problem on our hands”, he added, denouncing in particular the conclusions of the authorities. “I have never seen a medical examiner conclude that a drug mix was an accident without knowing who supplied the drugs or how they were ingested,” the lawyer wrote on Twitter. The latter accuses the Bridgeport police department of racial insensitivity deploring that it did not quickly investigate the death of this young black woman.

Lauren Smith-Fields was found dead Dec. 12 on the floor of her Bridgeport apartment. The student, who was taking classes at Norwalk Community College and working as an eyebrow specialist, died hours earlier after dating a man she had met three days earlier through the Bumble app. Police have not released the man’s name. Officers said he was the one who called for help after realizing Lauren’s nose was bleeding and she had stopped breathing.
“Find out whether or not he was related to people in the drug world,” asked the family lawyer. According to the relatives of the young woman, the police told them that this man was “a nice guy” and that there was “no need to investigate him”. The lawyer claims that the police “did not investigate this matter and refuse to consider the last person who was with Lauren Smith-Fields before her death as a person of interest. This behavior is unacceptable.” In response, Bridgeport’s mayor announced on Monday that the Home Affairs Bureau was investigating whether police acted improperly. “The Bridgeport Police Department continues to treat the untimely death of Lauren Smith-Fields as an active investigation as we now refocus our attention and efforts on the factors that led to her death,” the police chief said. of Bridgeport, Rebeca Garcia.
