“This attitude is completely unacceptable,” disciplinary officials within the ruling party said on Wednesday, promising that “action will be taken.” The name of the parliamentarian in question has not been made public.
This investigation comes after revelations from The Daily Mirror and the Sun newspapers. According to The Daily Mirror, it was a member of the government who mentioned the incident on Tuesday evening during a meeting of Conservative parliamentarians. She explained that a few months ago an MP, sitting next to her, watched porn on his cell phone.
This incident comes in the midst of a debate on sexism in Parliament.
Three ministers and two opposition MPs accused of “bad behavior of a sexual nature”
On Sunday, the Sunday Times revealed that three ministers and two opposition MPs are currently facing charges of “bad behavior of a sexual nature”, a term which can cover sexual harassment, voyeurism or even sexual assault.
They are among 56 deputies reported to an office responsible for registering these complaints, set up following the “Metoo” movement.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson, leader of the Conservative Party, told MPs on Wednesday that “sexual harassment is intolerable” and was “of course grounds for exclusion”.
A misogynistic attack against Labor Party number 2 Angela Rayner, relayed by the tabloid Mail on Sunday, also sparked controversy.
According to this newspaper, anonymous Tory MPs accuse Ms Rayner of enjoying distracting the Prime Minister by crossing and uncrossing her legs in Parliament.
