iOS 18: local AI on iPhones for more confidentiality and speed

Apple is working hard on artificial intelligence so as not to miss the mark against its competitors, such as Samsung and Google. Over the past few months, we have discovered various language models (LLM) under development.

Mark Gurman has just mentioned AI processing on iOS 18 in his latest newsletter Power On. The Bloomberg journalist specifies that the Apple firm would consider running all the artificial intelligence functionalities directly on the iPhone with its own language model (LLM).

By opting for local operation, Apple would allow offline use of its AI functions, while offering better execution speed and increased privacy compared to the cloud. 9to5Mac nevertheless emphasizes that this choice would limit the power of artificial intelligence.

This would still not prevent Apple’s AI from responding to simple queries, improving Siri’s understanding capabilities or even generating content (such as text, a document or an image).

The latest rumors also highlighted that Apple could opt for a mixed strategy regarding its next artificial intelligence functions. We learned during the month of March 2024 that Apple was in discussions with Google to integrate its Gemini language model on the iPhone.

Thus, it could be that iOS 18 offers AI features running locally on the iPhone for the simplest tasks, while the most complex ones would take advantage of Gemini via the Google cloud.

One thing is certain, WWDC 2024 in June will reveal to us all of Apple’s AI strategy around iOS 18, but also the next version of macOS designed for Macs with M4 chips.
