iOS 18: no generative AI from Apple on the program

WWDC 2024 has just been announced, and Mark Gurman wasted no time discussing Apple’s ambitions for the event, specifically in terms of artificial intelligence.

In an article published on March 26 on Bloomberg, the journalist focuses on the iPhone, emphasizing that “the new AI strategy [d’Apple] will be at the heart of the planned iOS 18 update”.

We thus learn that this new major version of the iPhone operating system would adopt “a series of new proactive features to help users in their daily lives”.

According to previous rumors, this would involve a version of Siri boosted with artificial intelligence, generative AI in the iWork and Xcode suite, the automatic creation of playlists in Apple Music or even writing assistance in Messages.

However, Apple would not be ready to offer its own artificial intelligence models to run these features. The company would in fact form partnerships with Google and OpenAI to achieve its goals (or even with Baidu for the Chinese market).

According to the journalist’s sources, who work on iOS 18, this would be the software update “the most ambitious in the history of the iPhone”.

Note, Mark Gurman explained in his last newsletter Power On published this Sunday that iOS 18 would also introduce deeper customization of the iPhone home screen.
