iPad Air 2024: Apple doubles down with two formats and an M2 chip

It’s time for the update for the iPad Air, which has not been renewed since 2022. The touchscreen tablet, initially designed to provide a slimmer and (trans)portable alternative to the iPad Pro, while being more efficient than classic iPads, gets a new generation.

The new iPad Air – because yes, there are now two of them – hardly surprise on a technical level, since they are in line with the iPad Air 2022. Understand that under the hood of the tablets, we finds the Apple M2 chip which logically succeeds the Apple M1 of the previous generation. Apple is therefore evolving its device without moving on to the M3, integrated into the MacBooks unveiled in March 2024, and even less to the M4 present within the new generation of iPad Pro.

This chip, which promises power (50% gain in terms of CPU power, according to Apple) and provides the device with 6E wifi compatibility, is hidden in an 11 or 13 inch case depending on the version chosen. , compared to 10.9 inches only for the 2022 model: this is the essential point to remember about these tablets. Don’t expect Oled to make its debut on these new Airs, which still feature Liquid Retina panels (i.e. IPS and Full HD+). On the other hand, we appreciate that the front camera of these devices is no longer on the side of the screen when held in landscape mode, but above their display, as is the case on the new iPad Pros 2024. This makes perfect sense for products of this size, especially since they are now compatible with the Magic Keyboard, to be used with a tablet oriented in landscape mode. They retain support for Apple Pencil styluses, which have already been offered for several years.

Let us add that the aluminum casing of the two tablets hides, on its power button, a Touch ID fingerprint reader, but also stereo speakers compatible with Spatial Audio.

Available in two formats and four colors (blue, purple, “starlight” and gray), the new generation of iPad Air is announced from €719 in its 11-inch version, and €969 for its 13-inch version. , both offered with storage between 128 GB and 1 TB, and in wifi or 5G. Pre-ordered today, the iPad Air 2024 will be delivered from May 15.
