According to The Economic Daily News, Apple has decided to entrust the entire production of its next 5G modems to TSMC. The Taiwanese semiconductor maker has, according to the report, succeeded in ousting Samsung from the race.
A modem engraved in 6 nm
The 5G modem that should equip the iPhone 14 would be engraved in 6 nm. Information that contradicts previous reports mentioning a fineness of engraving in 4 nm. But TSMC has an ace up its sleeve: its modem would be more efficient in terms of energy consumption, the manufacturer being able to produce 5G RF chips using radio frequencies to amplify the 5G signal. A technological path already taken by Qualcomm for the production of its own modems.
This would therefore mean that the iPhone 14 could benefit from better autonomy than the 2021 models. If the Pro and Pro max versions of the iPhone 13 proved to be very durable during our tests, the gain could be particularly interesting on the standard model stamped 14 this year. Recall that Apple should not offer a Mini model in 2022.
