iPhone 16 Pro camera: Apple digs deep into its bag of tricks

The camera in the iPhone gets a little bit better every year – until now you could rely on that. There’s no reason to believe that this won’t also be the case in 2024, with the launch of the iPhone 16. A corresponding rumor now provides fresh support for this assumption.

It’s about lens reflections, which are annoying for many users. You may have noticed when taking photos with your iPhone or other smartphone that double images, banding, and ghosting sometimes occur. These usually occur when you photograph bright objects such as lamps in dark situations. In English-speaking countries, this unwanted phenomenon is called lens flare. Some photographers approach this in a creative and playful way – but usually the effect is not intended and can only be avoided by changing the angle.

The leaker Yeux1122 now claims to have learned that Apple is addressing this problem. The key to this is said to be a protective layer a few nanometers thick on the lenses called “Atomic Layer Deposition” (ALD).

ALD is not new; it is already used in automobile construction and in other camera systems. It is still uncertain whether Apple will actually use the technology on the iPhone 16 this year, also because the source has not always been reliable in the past. However, this rumor is not unreasonable.
