The iPhone has established itself as the best-selling 5G smartphone in the world. Thanks to the success of the iPhone 12, Apple has captured 25% of the market share, ahead of Samsung, Xiaomi and Oppo.
The iPhone remains the best-selling 5G smartphone in the world, according to a new study from Strategy Analytics. In the third quarter of 2022, Apple largely edged Samsung and Xiaomi with more than 25% of the market share. As a reminder, the Californian brand rose to the top of the 5G market at the end of 2020 thanks to its iPhone 12.
Apple repeated the feat throughout 2021. The iPhone 12 range remained very popular in Europe, China and USA. Launched last September, the iPhone 13 is on track to establish itself as an excellent growth driver for the firm despite the shortage of computer chips. In fact, Apple should assert its dominance in the 5G market in the coming months.
Apple is ahead of Samsung, Xiaomi and others on 5G
In second place, we find the Chinese giant Xiaomi. “Xiaomi, which recorded spectacular growth in global 5G smartphone shipments in Q2 2021, saw this growth stagnate in Q3 2021”, explains Ken Hyers, director of Strategy Analytics. The analyst explains this slowdown in growth by fierce competition from brands like Oppo, which is very active in China, or Samsung.
Samsung, the world leader in mobile telephony, must be content with third place in the ranking of the 5G sector. “Samsung edged out OPPO to become the world’s second-largest supplier of Android 5G smartphones in the third quarter of 2021. Samsung is benefiting from healthy demand in several regions for its smartphones, fueled by a large portfolio of devices across multiple price points”, details Ville Petteri-Ukonaho, Associate Director of Strategy Analytics. Samsung’s progress is mainly due to the success of the Galaxy Z Flip 3, its latest foldable clamshell phone, and smartphones in the Galaxy A range.
Finally, the study highlights Honor’s meteoric growth, the former subsidiary of Huawei. “Honor was the fastest growing 5G Android smartphone brand”, explains Yiwen Wu, associate director of Strategy Analytics. Independent of its former parent company, Honor made a resounding return to the high end with references like the Honor 50.
