Iranian courts have executed a person for a drone attack that targeted a Defense Ministry site in central Iran last year, state media reported on Sunday. This person “had planned to blow up the Defense Ministry workshop complex in Isfahan under the leadership of the intelligence officer of Mossad”, Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, according to state television.

Iran and Israel have been engaged in a latent war for years

The date of the execution and the identity of the “terrorist,” as state television called him, were not specified. The Iranian Intelligence Ministry indicated in February 2023 that it had arrested the “main actors” involved in the drone attack. In January 2023, an anti-aircraft system destroyed a drone and two others exploded during an attack on Defense Ministry infrastructure in Isfahan province.

According to the ministry, the nighttime attack did not cause any casualties and caused only minor damage to the site. Authorities did not give details of activities at the site, but Iran’s official IRNA news agency said the strike targeted “a munitions manufacturing factory.” Iran and Israel have been engaged in a latent war for years. Israel accuses Iran – which denies it – of wanting to acquire the atomic bomb and says it is seeking by all means to prevent it. Israel also wants to counter Iran’s influence in the Middle East. Tehran in return accuses him of being behind a series of sabotage and assassinations targeting its nuclear program.

In August 2023, Iran claimed to have foiled a “very complex” project initiated by the Mossad to “sabotage” its ballistic missile industry. Last January, Iranian justice hanged four members of the Kurdish minority for spying for Israel. The four men were arrested on July 23, 2022 while preparing an operation against a Defense Ministry center in Isfahan, according to authorities.
