Five men were executed in Iran on Wednesday after being convicted of raping a woman in May 2022. According to an Amnesty International report last June, 282 executions took place in the country in 2023, nearly double last year over the same period.

Iran on Wednesday executed five men convicted of raping a woman in May 2022 in the northwest of the country, the Judicial Authority body said. “Five men who had kidnapped and raped a woman in May 2022 in the town of Marand (north-west) were executed today (Wednesday)”, announced Mizan Online.

Executions are usually carried out in Iran by hanging. “The defendants, who had multiple criminal records, were arrested four days after the crime,” said the same source.

282 people executed in 2023 in Iran

In early June, Amnesty International (AI) reported that 282 people had been executed in Iran in 2023, “almost double” the number of executions recorded during the same period last year.

Iran executed 582 people in 2022, more than any other country except China, according to several human rights NGOs, including AI.

In early July, Iranian justice reported the execution of three men convicted of drugging and then raping a dozen women at the end of 2021 in a beauty salon.
