CAIRO (Reuters) – Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Friday they seized a ship in Gulf waters loaded with 250,000 liters of smuggled fuel, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported.

The ship’s seven crew members were arrested, according to IRNA, citing the commander of the Revolutionary Guards.

The crew was made up of Iranians and foreigners, an official of the Revolutionary Guards told state television, without giving details.

Iran, whose fuel prices are among the cheapest in the world — due to large state subsidies and the falling Iranian currency — is battling rampant fuel smuggling overland to neighboring states and by sea to the Arab Gulf States.

Last week, the Revolutionary Guards seized a foreign vessel carrying 220,000 liters of smuggled fuel in the Gulf and arrested all 11 of its crew, according to Iranian media.
