The delta variant of the virus is cited as the cause of the increase in numbers. According to official information, over 94,000 people have now died of Corona in Iran, with more than 4 million infections detected since the beginning of the pandemic. As in many countries, the number of unreported cases is likely to be significantly higher in Iran.
The Delta variant has also pushed hospitals and nursing staff in Iran to the limit. In many cities, the intensive care units and emergency rooms are overcrowded with new corona patients. This also affects the medical services.
The Ministry of Health called for a two-week lockdown last week, but the Corona crisis team rejected it for economic reasons.
Iran is particularly hard hit by the corona pandemic, also because US sanctions have exacerbated the economic crisis and made the import of vaccines much more difficult. The vaccination campaign for the more than 83 million people is therefore making slow progress. So far, less than four percent of Iranians are fully vaccinated. (SDA)
