Iran: “the execution of demonstrators cannot take the place of a response to the demonstrations” for the Quai d’Orsay

The execution of protesterscannot take the place of a response to demonstrationsin progress in Iran, the French Foreign Ministry said on Monday, reacting to the public hanging on Monday of a man convicted in connection with the protest, the second execution in a few days.

France condemns in the strongest terms the public execution today of an Iranian man sentenced to death following his participation in the demonstrations“, declared the Quai d’Orsay, denouncing again “violations serious and unacceptable violations of fundamental rights and freedoms committed by the Iranian authorities.

Iran on Monday publicly executed by hanging a man convicted of participating in protests that have rocked the country for nearly three months. This is the second execution linked to the dispute.

“We are going to approve a set of very, very tough sanctions,” said European diplomacy chief Josep Borrell in Brussels.

“Iran must understand that the European Union will strongly condemn these acts and take all possible measures to support young women, peaceful protesters and certainly the rejection of the death penalty,” he said.

“There can be no impunity” for the perpetrators of the repression, according to the spokeswoman for the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs quoted in the press release.
