DUBAI, Feb 2 (Reuters) – An adviser to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards was killed on Friday in Damascus by an Israeli missile targeting the south of the Syrian capital, semi-official Iranian news sites reported.
State news agency SANA previously said the Syrian army shot down Israeli missiles launched from the Golan Heights, citing military sources.
News sites identified the victim as Saïd Alidadi, but did not specify without rank.
Israel has not provided comment on the attacks.
Israel has for years carried out attacks on targets described as linked to Iran in Syria, where Iranian influence has been growing since Tehran’s support for Bashar al-Assad in 2011 at the start of the Syrian civil war.
Since the October 7 attacks in Israel carried out by Hamas, Israel has intensified its attacks on Iranian-backed militias in Syria.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced Thursday the withdrawal of several of its officers from Syria following a series of deadly targeted strikes by the Israeli army, according to five sources familiar with the matter.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said Thursday that Iran will refrain from starting a war but will “respond firmly” to all attempts at intimidation, the day after the United States announced that it was preparing attacks against Iranian sites in Iraq and Syria.
