The United Nations Security Council met urgently on Sunday afternoon following Iran’s attack on Israel. A meeting during which many countries called for restraint, to stop an escalation.
The special session of the Security Council was an opportunity for lively exchanges between the different parties. Following a weekend of extreme tensions and an unprecedented drone and missile attack by Iran against Israel, the Israeli representative accused Iran of having crossed all red lines, and demanded sanctions. The Iranian ambassador, for his part, considered that his country’s action was an adequate response to the Israeli strike against its consulate in Syria.
No official resolution against Iran
Both countries were able to count on the support of their respective allies: the United States for Israel, Russia and China for Iran. And in the middle, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres tried to moderate the debates. “I strongly condemn the serious escalation of the full-scale attack launched by the Islamic Republic of Iran against Israel. Now is the time to deescalate and appease, and exercise utmost restraint,” he said. he declared.
The Council considered that the Middle East was on the verge of generalized conflict, and that things must not be made worse. Which undoubtedly explains why no official resolution has been taken against Iran. The UN simply recalled that its priority was a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the hostages.
