BAGHDAD (Reuters) – The Iraqi Supreme Court on Monday rejected appeals filed by pro-Iranian Shiite parties to challenge the result of the parliamentary elections on October 10, marked by their sharp decline.

The militia parties denounced irregularities during the ballot won by the movement of Imam Moktada al Sadr, opposed to any foreign interference in Iraq, with 73 seats obtained out of the 329 of the Council of Representatives.

Once the result has been confirmed by the Supreme Court, negotiations should begin between Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish formations on the formation of a new government to replace the outgoing executive headed by Prime Minister Moustafa al Kadhimi.
