Iris Berben has been one of the big names in German show business for many years. With her self-confident and authentic manner, she captivates the audience. However, her independence and strength are no coincidence, as she reveals in a talk with Annika Lau for a new GALA show.

Iris Berben not only stands for German acting, but also for self-determination, strength and independence. The now 72-year-old not only asserted herself in a male domain, but was also a single mother. In an interview with presenter Annika Lau, 43, for GALA on TV, she reveals how she managed to assert herself as an independent woman.

Iris Berben on strength and independence

“I raised a child alone, even at a time when it was relatively unusual,” says Berben. “I have a job that’s beautiful and I enjoy it and it gives me strength, and yet it’s a job that requires you to constantly prove yourself, especially as you get older.” But the actress can also see mistakes from time to time. She also has many moments of weakness and that’s “right,” she clarifies.

Above all, they shaped the 1968 movement, reveals Iris Berben. “To become independent. Financially, of course, then breaking out of conventions or not accepting them,” she explains, adding: “I haven’t been married until now.”

Iris Berben: “I’m not afraid”

Doesn’t all of this require a good deal of courage? “I don’t know if I’m brave, but I’m not afraid. And I grew up pretty fearlessly. Even at a time that may also be due to the times.”

She loves “passionately and uncompromisingly”

Since 2007, Berben has been in a relationship with her partner, stuntman Heiko Kiesow, whom she once met while filming. When asked how she loves, the performer has this to say: “Passionate, uncompromising, unmanageable, unthinking. Not as a plan. Not as an idea. Love is so elusive I find.”
