Another Pokémon-style monster collection game? Yes and no. First conceived as an MMO, DokeV eventually took the helm of a open-world adventure game. It is strongly inspired by South Korean culture and folklore and the very principle of the gameplay is rather to befriend the NPCs and creatures that inhabit this universe so colorful and special. During an interview with the developers, we learned much more and are now convinced that the title has nothing to do with Pokémon.

What should be done in DokeV?
Dokebis are creatures that must be collected in the game and are in fact little spirits of South Korean folklore. This was the number 1 inspiration for developers to create the world of DokeV. Dokebi can sense the dreams of humans and make them come true. These creatures then inspire people with great courage but … they sometimes do stupid things and cause catastrophes in spite of themselves. Described as “fun” friends, your objective will then be to collect as much Dokebi as possible during your adventure. This is quite honestly the only common point with Pokémon: the collection of monsters.
How do we progress?
The story of the game progresses as you meet different NPCs and listen to their tales to understand their dreams. You will then have to help them solve their problems by traveling through the city and the open world. Mini-games, quests, and monster fights will then need to be completed to advance.
How do you catch a Dokebi?
The Dokebi do not capture each other but meet. You will need to befriend a creature if you want them to accompany you afterwards. The developers explain that it is necessary to meet several specific conditions before a special event is triggered to finalize the link. Clues will be disseminated in the city and in the world to understand the history of the Dokebi in question and be able to find it.
How does the fighting work?
The fights are in real time and the developers wanted to mix different styles to make it fun and mainstream. From what we can see, the fights are often 4 against 1: you and your 3 Dokebis against the enemy monster. A rather satisfactory system since it allows us to fight ourselves alongside our creatures. We do not yet know if the Dokebis have types or even skills but we can see that the character can have a variety of different equipment and weapons.
Move freely
As in any self-respecting open world, DokeV allows players to move freely through the streets of the city and different environments. The characters can be seen using skateboards, rollerblades, bicycles, umbrellas, water scooters and other more wacky means of transportation like a llama.
A developer explains that to get all these items, you will have to complete certain quests and that the progression system is really fun. Much more than that, Pearl Abyss wanted to show the Korean culture in the game and especially a realistic aspect rather than a virtual world in which no one could identify.
Assumed features
- At certain points in the trailer, we can see the character using a hammer on a pole: will there be a crafting and / or decoration system?
- In the very first trailer for the game in 2019, initially designed to be a mmo, we could see clothing stores: no doubt we will be able to customize your character and buy cosmetics regularly,
- What about co-op and multiplayer? Likewise, the very first mmo mode trailer showed multiplayer fights. While this aspect has surely been dropped, we might still be able to play DokeV co-op with friends.
In addition to what the trailer shows us, there are still many things to discover, so don’t hesitate to come back regularly to our dedicated portal. In short, DokeV is nothing like Pokémon (except the collection of monsters of course) and seems to offer a rather original concept.
