After airing in August 2022 on Hulu, the series The Patient lands on Disney+. It features Steve Carell in a new dramatic role, far removed from his clownish mimics of The Office. The actor plays Alan Strauss, a renowned psychiatrist who recently lost his wife. His life changes again when he is kidnapped and kidnapped by one of his patients, the young Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson). This one reveals to him to have murderous obsessions. He therefore asks her to help him get rid of it while continuing to kill.

Through these deadly consequences sessions, Alan Strauss will also have to confront his own demons and his pain. Serial killer confessions are a hot topic in TV shows. Netflix has also devoted a whole series to the recordings of real serial killers. The Patient however, is not of the same type.

The writers relied on their experience

Contrary to what one might imagine, The Patient is not based on a true story. However, it does not come from nowhere. The screenwriters, Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg, based on their own experience to imagine this synopsis. They have both experienced psychotherapy. Asked by Newsweekthey defined their job as “groping” for ideas.

“We like to start with topics that interest and excite us. We started discussing the fact that we had both done many therapies. We thought it was something important in our lives and therefore something we just had to write about,” they detailed. However, they have known neither serial killer nor psychoanalyst chained to a table. The Patient will arrive on Disney+ on December 14.
