“Is this really necessary?” : Henry Cavill doesn’t like seeing this in the cinema

Freed from the costumes of Superman and The Witcher, Henry Cavill is not idle. In promotion for his new film, “Argylle”, the British actor spoke about his vision of love scenes in films and series.

Famous for having played Superman in the DC Universe, the witcher Geralt de Rive in the series The Witcher or the formidable agent Walker opposite Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible: Fallout, the British actor Henry Cavill is currently starring in the new feature film by Matthew Vaughn, in which he plays secret agent Argylle.

Recently interviewed alongside the filmmaker in the Happy Sad Confused podcastthe actor whose name regularly comes up when we talk about possible successors to James Bond, notably gave his opinion on sex scenes in cinema.

Following in the footsteps of Matthew Vaughn, when the latter had just explained that the concept of these sequences was completely beyond him, Henry Cavill declared that he shared his opinion:

“I don’t understand either, I’m not a fan”confided the actor, who sometimes had to interpret torrid scenes, notably in the series The Tudors and The Witcher.

“Is this really necessary?”

“I think there are certain circumstances where a sex scene really benefits a film, beyond the audience. But I think sometimes these days it’s overused. There’s that moment where the we say to ourselves: ‘Is this really necessary? Or are these just people with fewer clothes on them?’

That’s when we start to feel less comfortable and we say to ourselves: ‘There is no interpretation here, there is no element that we will be able to bring it to its conclusion in the rest of the film.'”

Henry Cavill continues by explaining that in his eyes, the sequences in question do not always serve the story, and that they are not necessarily justified:

“Sex scenes can be great in a movie and can really help the storytelling, but a lot of the time the human imagination is going to win out, so I think sometimes it can be a good excuse, when a series or a film is literally filled with intertwining bodies. We wonder what exactly that brings us…'”
